An Italian priest who was killed by the Mafia in 1993 has been recognized by the Vatican as a martyr for the faith.
The Congregation for the Causes of Saints announced on June 28 that Father Giuseppe Puglisi, who was shot and killed in Palermo, Sicily, was killed “out of hatred for the faith” and therefore qualifies as a martyr. Father Puglisi was a target of the Mafia because of his frequent public denunciations of organized crime.
[Upon beatification, Don Pino will be called “Blessed”. The same decree of the Congregation for Saints indicated its finding that Archbishop Fulton Sheen exhibited heroic virtues and may be called “Venerable”.]

Sicilian anti-Mafia priest to receive beatification (ANSA) – Vatican City, June 28 – An Italian anti-Mafia priest murdered in 1993, Giuseppe ‘Pino’ Puglisi, is to receive beatification by Pope Benedict XVI, Vatican sources said on Thursday.
Pope Benedict authorized the Vatican Congregation for the Causes of Saints to promote Puglisi as a martyr killed by those who have “hate for the faith”.
In recent years the number of clergymen who have risked their lives to fight the Mafia has risen, led by the example of Puglisi who was gunned down on his 56th birthday in the Brancaccio neighborhood of Palermo, Sicily.
